My Favorite 2009 Christmas Albums

I have an obsession with Christmas music.  This should surprise no one.
I only mention it because I think that it gives me some credibility when I tell you that these are, in my view, the best Christmas albums released in 2009.

1. Salvation Is Created - Bifrost Arts

This album is a beautiful tapestry with creative arrangements of both standard carols and rarely-covered songs.  Incredibly, it manages to "feel like Christmas" - while still sounding completely fresh.  I have found myself listening to this in my car and in the background at work - and each time, something new jumps out.

Here's how the reviewer at ChristianityToday described it: "Re-imagining liturgical carols with every instrumental vice possible, the setlist plays like a medieval soundtrack, magically capturing the beautiful irony of the gospel story."

(Also, they get points because the title track is a remake of an amazing choral piece, which if you aren't familiar with it's background - I recommend reading up on it.)

They put out a worship album earlier this year (Come O Spirit) that's worth checking out, as well.

2. Glory in the Highest: Christmas Songs of Worship - Chris Tomlin

When I heard that Chris Tomlin was putting out a Christmas album, I was really hoping that it would be like this.  It's a bit the opposite of the Bifrost album - in that it's simple and has a live feel.  One of the great things about Christmas is singing together as a church family about this incredible Story; as you would expect, this album is perfect for that (transposed down, of course!).

Honorable Mention:
On the Incarnation - Daniel Renstrom

Be born in us today

Kari has a really beautiful post today where she challenged us to take a picture of the manger scene, including a figure that represents us.

Here's mine:

(I'm the horn-playing tomte.)

It's an amazing thing that God allows us to enter His Story.
And as I run around eating Christmas goodies, enjoying lots of Christmas music and stressing out about any random thing- I don't want to overlook the opportunity to experience the wondrous and miraculous presence of Christ.
God with us.

O holy child of Bethlehem
descend to us, we pray
cast out our sin and enter in
be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angels
their great glad tidings tell
O come to us, abide with us
our Lord, Emmanuel

An Affirmation of Faith for Advent

I believe that Christmas is more than a time for parties and ornaments;
it is a time for remembering Christ and the incarnation of God’s love in human flesh.

I believe there are gifts more important than the ones under the Christmas tree,
such as the things we teach our children, the way we share ourselves with friends,
and the industry with which we set about reshaping the world in our time.

I believe that the finest carols are often sung by poorest voices,
from hearts made warm by the wonder of the season.

I believe in the angels’ message that we should not be afraid -
that the Child of Bethlehem is able to overcome all anxieties and insecurities.

I believe in prayer and quietness as a way of appropriating Christmas -
that if I wait in silence I will experience the One born in the stable,
for he lives today as surely as he lived then.

I believe in going away from Christmas as the wise men went – “another way.”
I want to be different when these days are past -
more centered, more thoughtful, more caring.

And I believe God will help me.  Amen.

What if I made a mix using just one song?

My favorite Christmas song is "O Come O Come Emmanuel" (which, if you want to get technical, is an Advent song - not a Christmas song).

I've threatened several times to make an entire mix of versions of this one song.

Some versions I like:

I could also add in some songs that just reference it.  You know.  For variety.

Too much?  Perhaps.
(That may not stop me.)
